Global Immersion Field Trips

The Global Immersion Field Trips (GIFTs) are a highlight of the MiM Programme and offer a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in different business environments as well as to learn, network and enjoy another country and culture. You will visit companies, meet with executives and engage with current business thinking. Each trip is very different in its offering, but can include a fascinating mix of innovative company visits, lectures, master-classes and networking dinners.
How to Apply
At the beginning of September the Programme Office will brief you on the different field trips offered and the application process. You may apply for multiple field trips but you can only attend ONE. The application process is competitive – if you want to go on a GIFT we advise that you apply for multiple field trips in case you do not get selected for your top choice.
Although the application process happens in September we encourage you to start thinking about which GIFT you would like to attend, by reading the below trip details and cost information, so you can begin to budget accordingly.
Locations

* Trips are still subject to change.
December GIFTs
Silicon Valley: 4th – 10th December. Approx. 60 spaces
The Silicon Valley GIFT will take place at the beginning of the December break. The focus of this trip is entrepreneurship and innovation. The aim is that students gain an understanding of the environment that fosters such significant levels of innovation and entrepreneurship. During the last trip, students visited the Stanford D. School, participated in a Design Thinking Workshop as well as visiting a range of smaller early and mid-stage start-ups, as well as giants such as Google. Students also visited companies involved in funding start-ups such as Soft Tech and Andressen Horowitz. Students also had time to enjoy a baseball game, take in the beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge, and meet LBS alumni at a networking evening.

Hong Kong & Shanghai - TBC. Approx. 60 spaces
The Hong Kong & Shanghai GIFT will provide an immersion into Chinese business and culture. The focus of this trip is for students to gain a deeper understanding of the Chinese economy and of how business is conducted in China. The trip is run in partnership with Fudan University and if you attend this trip you will receive lectures from faculty at Fudan as well as company visits. Last year our visits included an innovation hub and visits to Metro Group, Strikingly, Glamour Sales, Shanghai Media Group, and Bosch. In addition the class will be able to enjoy the nightlife that both cities have to offer.
April GIFTs
Munich & Milan: Date TBC. Approx. 45 spaces
The European ‘Supply Chain’ GIFT will take place during the Spring break. The focus of this field trip is supply chains and operations. The aim is that students will visit automotive companies and component manufacturers in both Munich and Milan to observe high-end and mass market manufacturing across different cultures and to meet with executives to better understand the challenges within the markets. During the last trip, students visited Knorr-Bremse, Cannon, and Magneti Marelli. This is a fast moving trip; students will be flying from Munich to Milan between days one and two.
Paris – 5th -7th April. Approx. 40 spaces
The Paris 'Customer Experience' GIFT will also take place during Spring break. The aim of the trip is to understand customer journeys and to gain exposure to the breadth of the area. This past year the students visited a great mix of companies from French film and television group Canal +, independent digital communication group Fred & Farid, and French food brand Michel et Augustin. This trip is 2.5 days long; we aim to stay centrally to allow students to explore Paris outside of the visits.

May GIFTs

New York- 21st - 27th May. Approx. 60 spaces
The newest addition to the GIFT portfolio provides opportunity to witness the finance industry in action. You will connect with our LBS alumni network, visit a variety of companies that employ quantitative analysts and meet asset managers and executives from buy and sell side companies to discuss the challenges facing the industry in a post-2008 world. Attending integrative presentations from researchers will provide insight into the complexity of company valuation in light of recent economic and geo-political developments. You’ll also explore developments in FinTech and hear how market disruptors like blockchain, crowdfunding, and data mining are dramatically changing the industry landscape.
